If your kids are like mine, they love to play outdoors in
the winter months, whether they are racing downhill in sleds, snowboarding or just having an old fashioned
snowball fight it is obvious that children
want to spend a lot of time playing in the
snow! As parents, our main concern is that our kids remain warm and dry while outside in cold, snowy
conditions and one way to achieve this is to have them wear one of the many kid’s snowsuits that are
available from most makers of outdoor wear. Children’s bodies are obviously not fully developed and one thing to remember is that their
internal heating and heat retention systems are not yet capable of handling extreme temperatures. In the
winter, your child can quickly lose body heat and potentially develop hypothermia, which is a very dangerous
condition that can lead to serious injury and death. Fortunately, today’s snowsuits are made from materials that are excellent at shielding your child from the
elements, while maximizing heat retention and comfort during even the most severe of temperatures.
You should consider the environment that your child will be in and assess whether it is simply a
bit chilly in winter or if it gets bitter cold, as it does in some of the northern and Midwestern states.
Snowsuits vary in thickness and insulating capabilities and you should ensure that you are
buying the appropriate winter wear for your child. Too much insulation and heat retention in mild winter
climates can actually promote overheating and may lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, conditions normally
associated with summer and warm weather. If your child is equipped with a snowsuit that is too heavy he or she
can sweat to the extent that the body loses its capacity to cool itself and this is a very dangerous situation.
The lesson to learn is to select proper clothing and avoid overdressing your child for actual weather
conditions.
For those living in severe climates such as Michigan, Colorado, Wisconsin and other states known
for very cold weather, it is important that you equip your child with heavier, better insulated snowsuits and outerwear. In climates such as these it is important that your child
dress in layers of clothing, which means any snowsuit you purchase must allow for a few sets of heat retaining
shirts, tights or long leggings to be worn comfortably underneath it. Most people living in these climates are
quite knowledgeable on this and other techniques that enable one to remain warm in very cold weather. If you are
new to living in severe winter climates you should seek advice from those more experienced in dealing with harsh
winter weather.
It is easy to find well made and very effective kids snow suits on today’s market. Most major
outerwear manufacturers offer product lines for kids and you’ll have a wide variety from which to choose. Some
of the more popular brands of kid’s snowsuits are Columbia, Obermeyer, Burton, Patagonia and Spyder. You can buy with confidence any snowsuit or
winter wear made by any of these firms. You can find quality winter wear at many local stores and online. The variety of products and abundance of
bargains found online is quite impressive and we urge you to purchase from an online merchant because we feel
you’ll get the best deal possible there. Whether buying online or from a local merchant be sure to ask in
advance about any warranties and return policies in case they are needed subsequent to buying a kid’s
snowsuit.
